Up until press time the island of Grand Cayman was experiencing frequent, heavy showers and cloudy skies.
According to Gilbert Miller Weather Forecaster at the Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS), this was due to “a tropical wave, which is being supported by an upper level trough leading to widespread showers and thundershowers”.
“While the 2015 Hurricane Season was negatively impacted by a very strong El Nino, the pattern is likely to transition to either neutral or La Niña conditions by the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season,” he told The Cayman Reporter.
He warned, “Just because they call for an average season does not mean we should relax.
The three-day forecast through Monday 6 June predicted overcast skies with numerous showers and thunder.
Showers were anticipated to be locally heavy at times and to possibly lead to localised flooding.
Despite this wet and windy start to hurricane season, which began officially on 1 June, according to CINWS Director John Tibbetts the Cayman Islands can expect approximately average activity this hurricane season.
